This exam, required for citizenship applications by marriage or by residency, has been a requirement for citizenship since 2018.

  • Citizenship by Marriage:

    As a foreign national married to an Italian citizen, you have the opportunity to obtain Italian citizenship through marriage, also known as Jure Matrimoni. To apply for Italian citizenship through marriage, you’ll need to provide a copy of your marriage certificate issued by the Italian municipality where your Italian spouse is registered with AIRE (Registry of Italian Citizens Residing Abroad), and you must possess a B1 proficiency certificate.

  • Citizenship by Residency:

    For non-EU citizens, the path to Italian citizenship involves being a legal resident in Italy for a minimum of 10 years, as documented in the town’s registry office. On the other hand, EU citizens can apply after just 4 years of residency. To be eligible for Italian citizenship by residency, you’ll need to demonstrate certified knowledge of the Italian language at a minimum B1 level.

NOTE: It is not required to pass a language test to apply for Italian citizenship by descent

Language proficiency levels are from the Common European Framework Reference (CEFR) for languages, which defines proficiency levels by outlining six levels, which include A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2, from a beginner user (level A1) to a native-speaking user (level C2).
The B1 level certification demonstrates intermediate proficiency and the ability to use the Italian language for everyday interaction and prove the applicant’s ability to live, work or study in Italy. A B1 level demonstrate intermediate ability to communicate and understand topics usually experienced in work, school, travel, and recreational scenarios. The applicant should be able to communicate simple concepts about himself/herself and his/her interests, and provide descriptions of events and experiences.
